J.A. HUSS: I THOUGHT THREE, TWO, ONE WOULD RUIN MY CAREER

J.A. Huss celebrated the best year of her writing career in 2015. Her novel Three, Two, One hit the bestselling ranks and became one of the top titles in romantic suspense genre.

Our next guest likes to write about family, loyalty and extraordinary characters that have problems with some basic emotions.

It’s a great pleasure to welcome Julie Huss at Land of Books.

huss

– Julie, Three, Two, One became one of the biggest hits for 2015. Did you expect that the book will become NY Times and USA Today bestseller?

– No, not at all. I really thought that book would ruin my career because it’s so out of the mainstream of what people are writing. No one, as far as I could tell, was focusing on what a real love relationship between three people would be like, and that was the main focus of my book. That these three people were one hundred percent in love. When you add in the erotica and the dark suspense, that makes it even less mainstream. So I really have no idea why this book was the one to take off for me.

brad_taylor

– Brad, Pike Logan continues his adventures in Book #9 of the series The Forgotten Soldier. What the readers may expect from the new novel?
– The Taskforce was created out of whole cloth, completely made up by me for my novels, but I used my experiences to do so, tapping into what I knew of the world in which I’d lived. The organization is nothing more than a fantasy we used to wish existed whenever we ran into the inertia of the United States bureaucracy, but inside, we realized why such inertia exists, and it’s precisely to prevent any one individual from misusing a dangerous asset. America has had a love/hate relationship with special operations throughout its history, resulting in many units being disbanded or rendered toothless the minute the threat was gone because the cure was believed to be worse than the disease. It is only in modern times that SOF has flourished, but it has come with a price. The crux of repeated covert action in a democracy is that a nation can only go so far before its actions begin to erode the very ideals the unit was designed to protect, which is why we have such robust oversight in United States Code. The Taskforce has no such constraints, and I’ve threaded the potential for its abuse throughout my books. This time, I decided to explore it as a main theme.

CATHERINE RYAN HYDE: ASK HIM WHY IS A STORY ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DON’T LISTEN TO EACH OTHER ENOUGH

Three weeks ago, American bestselling author Catherine Ryan Hyde released her latest novel Ask Him Why. The book grabbed right away readers’ attention with its deep emotion.

We’ve got a great chance to speak once again with the good friend of Land of Books. In the next lines she is talking about her new book, her next project and how different is Amazon publishing from the traditional publishers.

It’s a great honor to welcome for the second time at Land of Books Catherine Ryan Hyde. If you missed our previous interview with her check it out here.

catherine

– Catherine, your latest book Ask Him Why once again is praised by the readers. The publisher Lake Union describes the novel with “stunning and emotional story of a young soldier’s unthinkable act…and the bonds of a sister and brother’s love.” How would you describe it?
– I think I’d say it’s a story about what happens when we don’t talk to each other enough. Or, more importantly, maybe when we don’t listen to each other enough. It’s about a family in which communication is nearly nonexistent, and the chilling effects of this silence on a teenage brother and sister. Their older brother, Joseph, has come back from the war in Iraq surrounded by a cloud of controversy. Everyone thinks Joseph refused to go out on duty because of cowardice, so no one asks. Until ten years later, near the end of the book. Then Ruth asks, and the answer is nothing anyone could have imagined.

And he did splendid job!

alan_foster

– Alan, the book adaptation of Stat Wars: The Force Awakens received a lot of praise? The big question is would the fans of the saga get more answers compared to the movie?
– Absolutely. I was able to fill in some scenes that were cut from the final edit. Also I was able to add new dialogue, and get into the thoughts of the characters. That is what a good novelization should do.

mark

– Mark, what is your book Fields of Wrath about?
– A number of years ago, I read that in the Los Angeles undocumented immigrant community, a number of people had begun to take their problems to the church rather than the police. Fields of Wrath is about a young priest named Luis Chavez, only six months past ordination, who has a crime involving a missing Oaxacan girl fall into his lap. Deciding that God put it in front of him as a test, he goes about trying to get to solve the case.

aurelie

Aurélie, what is your book Out of Sorts about?
– First of all, I would like to thank you Ognian for your invitation in your blog! A real honor for me to be one of your guests.
I love to read books which are all about beautiful unexpected encounters, such as we would like to see happen a bit more in our daily life. This is what I tried to convey in Out of sorts, putting lights on a neighborhood (all protagonists live in the same building) in which extraordinary friendships between three ordinary life people would occur. Ferdinand, the protagonist, cantankerous old man, represents the man we could all become, alone and bitter, if we are not making today the needed efforts to demonstrate better our love to the people around us. Beatrice, 93, his door neighbor, is his complete opposite. She enjoys everyday as the last one and can’t help herself from learning new things and meeting new people every day. These two neighbors would never have a chance to talk to each other unless an expected encounter would revolutionize their life. New neighbor, Juliette, 10, fresh, positive and cheeky, literally invites herself at Ferdinand’s and establishes new relationships between the three of them, making the old man to open up not only his door but his heart too. Obviously, this generational shock brings lots of humoristic incongruous situations.
