Bestseller is a book or other product that sells in very large numbers
This is the Oxford dictionary’s definition for one of the most used words in publishing business.
I’ve got an idea to present the ranks of the most popular novels in Amazon, via their kindle classification. Every first day of the month a resume of Top 10 books for the previous one will be posted on my blog.
As you know the Amazon’s system of ranking is kept in secret just like Coca-Cola’s formula. I will try to solve the secret, so will take a Top 20 from each week during the month and to make a Top 10 classification from these 4 weeks.
For example:
Robert Dugoni’s My Sister’s grave is
#1 on week 20 points
#3 on week 18 points
#1 on week 20 points
#5 on week 16 pointa
It makes a total of 74 points (the total of each weekly classification)
John Grisham’s Gray Mountain is
#2 on week 19 points
#2 on week 19 points
#3 on week 18 points
#6 on week 15 points
the novel will collect 71 points.
The Glassblower by Petra Durst-Benning is
#3 on week 18 points
#4 on week 17 points
#2 on week 19 points
#2 on week 19 points
It makes 73 points points
So first place is for the book with less points:
1. My Syster’s grave 74 points
2. The Glassblower 73 points
3. Gray Mountain 71 points
The first ever classification was a test one. I used my personal view of what happened during the month of October to rank the Top 10 classification. Check it out here.
Ognian,
Perhaps useful (to some). But you should know (if you don’t already) that “bestseller” and “top-quality” are not necessarily synonymous. By way of analogy, many GREAT films never won an Oscar.
Today’s bestselling novel could well become tomorrow’s doorstop.
Russell
Russell,
First, thanks for your comment. I agree with you. As you saw, this is the reason why I used official dictionary definition for the word bestseller. Speaking of quality, everybody has his own opinion, but if the majority of opinions are the same, it seems that the society opinion is for top-quality.
The difference between movies and Amazon chart is that Oscars are given by vote of small number of people, while the box office is formed by the majority of viewers. In Amazon ranks the classification is formed by the buy rates.
Ognian,
“The difference between movies and Amazon chart is that Oscars are given by vote of small number of people, while the box office is formed by the majority of viewers. In Amazon ranks the classification is formed by the buy rates.”
Absolutely correct!
As for “top-quality,” with books — as with any art form — I believe time is a critical element. Unfortunate as it may be for either him or her, the author frequently has to die (after having lived a long life in poverty) before history and critics can pass judgment on his or her work.
